New Roots

The crown of this beautiful pineapple plant previously pertained to a delicious pineapple fruit. After consuming this savory fruit, I couldn’t help but feel compelled to set the crown into a glass of water [as I do with many of my food scraps] in attempt to see if new roots would form. To my surprise, the pineapple was eager to reproduce once again, and grew new roots in a matter of just under 2 week. As I was gardening yesterday, I couldn’t help but feel deeply connected with the soil of the earth.

In my Ayurveda course I learned that we embody 3 doshas – Vata – Pitta and Kapha which are energies that circulate the body and govern physiological activity. Such energetic constitutions are made up of the same elements that all living matter is made up of on earth which is; Fire, Water, Air, Space and Earth. When doshas are out of balance – our state of health follows. For example, a person with excess Pitta holds energy that is linked to fire, which controls the digestive and endocrine systems. People with pitta energy are considered fiery in temperament, intelligent and fast-paced. When pitta energy is out of balance, ulcers, inflammation, digestive problems, anger, heartburn, acne and arthritis can result to name a few.

With that being said, I couldn’t help but reflect on the principles that Ayurveda has taught me while digging through the soil and setting the pineapple crown back into the grown where it originally came from. I felt a sense of oneness with the earth. We are majestic, divine and energetic light beings covered in contemporary bones and skin which possess the same elemental qualities of the nature that surrounds us. Nature has an interesting way of assigning our energetic souls to our current physical bodies. Even though the physical body of the pineapple is gone, the crown much like the soul remains, and with the help of the elements of the earth it enables its self to re- grow new roots and form a new body once again.
